Boosting Energy and Climate Cooperation: European Commission Calls for Applications for Infrastructure Projects
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission has opened applications for PCI or PMI status under the TEN-E Regulation to link energy infrastructure and boost cooperation.
  • Projects in electricity, hydrogen, and more have deadlines for submission for fast-tracking and cost support access.
  • CB RES projects focusing on renewable energy and cross-border cooperation have secured funding from the CEF.
  • The revised TEN-E regulation supports the European Climate Law's goal of reaching society-wide climate neutrality by 2050.
The European Commission has initiated the application process for Project of Common Interest (PCI) or Project of Mutual Interest (PMI) status under the Trans-European Networks for Energy (TEN-E) Regulation. This regulation aims to interconnect state and regional energy infrastructure, including power, low-carbon gas, hydrogen, and CO2 networks, to enhance energy and climate collaboration within the EU and beyond. The fast-track PCI or PMI status facilitates project permitting and provides access to financial support like the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Deadlines for project submissions vary, with electricity, hydrogen, and other projects required to apply by specific dates. The Commission also announced the opening of applications for inclusion in the EU's TEN-E projects list focusing on renewable energy. Cross-border renewable energy projects are eligible for funding, with 14 projects already securing CEF support. The TEN-E regulation revision aligns with the 2021 European Climate Law, which targets climate neutrality by 2050. The updates aim to streamline infrastructure development, encourage renewable energy initiatives, and foster cross-border cooperation.
