BP's H2Teesside Project: Pioneering Low Carbon Hydrogen Production Hub in the UK
Key Ideas
  • BP and partners, including Technip Energies and Costain, are progressing towards finalizing agreements for a low carbon hydrogen production facility in Teesside, UK.
  • The project aims to capture and store over two million tonnes of CO2 annually, contributing significantly to the UK's hydrogen production targets for 2030.
  • H2Teesside seeks to supply a diverse customer base and support economic development in the region by creating job opportunities, promoting skills development, and catalyzing a UK-based hydrogen and CCS supply chain.
  • BP envisions H2Teesside as a transformative project that will help establish Teesside as a prominent hydrogen hub, driving the UK's low carbon hydrogen economy forward.
BP has finalized a statement of principles with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) for its H2Teesside project, signaling progress towards developing a low carbon hydrogen production hub in Teesside, UK. The project, part of the East Coast Cluster, will include a blue hydrogen production facility with integrated carbon capture. Technip Energies will handle the FEED contracts for the facility, while Costain has been chosen to design the pipeline distribution infrastructure. The project targets capturing and storing over two million tonnes of CO2 per year and aims to achieve 1.2GW of hydrogen production, representing over 10% of the UK's 2030 hydrogen production target. H2Teesside intends to supply a wide range of customers and contribute to the economic development and regeneration of Teesside by creating job opportunities, supporting education and skills development, and stimulating a UK-based hydrogen and CCS supply chain. Andy Lane, VP for hydrogen and CCUS at BP, UK, highlighted the critical role H2Teesside can play in decarbonizing industry in Teesside, transforming the region into a key hydrogen hub, and advancing the UK's low carbon hydrogen economy.
