Ceramics UK has reached a major milestone in its 'Demonstrating Hydrogen in the Ceramics Sector' project with the successful commissioning of a custom-built pilot kiln operating on 100% hydrogen. This groundbreaking achievement signifies the first time a pilot kiln of this scale has operated entirely on hydrogen fuel in the UK ceramics industry. The project aims to explore hydrogen as an alternative fuel for ceramic production, with trials already underway firing member-produced ceramic products using hydrogen. Dr. Andrew McDermott, the Deputy Chief Executive of Ceramics UK, highlighted the importance of this achievement, emphasizing the technical feasibility of using hydrogen for firing ceramic products without affecting quality. The project, supported by 13 ceramic manufacturing companies and Glass Futures, demonstrates a collective commitment to decarbonisation within the sector. Funding from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero further underlines the project's significance in advancing pre-commercial fuel switch technologies for a lower-carbon future. This project serves as a crucial step towards sustainability in the ceramics industry and showcases innovative approaches to reducing carbon emissions in manufacturing.
