Chile is making significant strides in regulating and fostering the growth of its green hydrogen industry. The country recently presented an updated regulatory working plan, as part of its 2023-30 green hydrogen action plan. This initiative involves coordinated efforts from various state entities to drive the industry forward. The regulatory work includes creating or amending sixteen regulations, covering aspects like safety rules, quality standards, and guidelines for hydrogen use in fueling stations. The green hydrogen projects in Chile aim to leverage the country's renewable energy resources, with around 70 projects announced so far. These projects are focused on regions like Magallanes, Antofagasta, and Biobío. The industry plans to develop both large-scale export-oriented plants as well as smaller projects to facilitate local decarbonization. However, the industry faces challenges such as reducing costs, identifying offtakers, and navigating environmental reviews. Pilot projects like the Haru Oni synthetic gasoline demonstration plant are already underway, paving the way for larger-scale facilities in the coming years. To support industry growth, Chile's regulatory plan includes a timeline for various modifications and creations of regulations. These include rules for hydrogen safety, quality regulations, and guidelines for fueling stations. The country is committed to creating enabling conditions for sustainable development in the green hydrogen sector, with support from entities like GIZ, H2Chile, and H2Magallanes.
