China has launched its first integrated offshore hydrogen-ammonia-methanol project in Yantai, Shandong province. The project, developed by CHN Energy Hydrogen Energy Technology, CIMC Raffles, and Guoneng Hydrogen Innovation Technology, is a comprehensive demonstration of offshore hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilization. The operational trial phase began after the construction was completed in March 2027. The project features a semi-submersible offshore hydrogen production platform equipped with photovoltaic systems and energy storage devices for energy self-sufficiency. It houses hydrogen production units, desalination modules, and converts hydrogen into methanol and ammonia to tackle storage and transportation challenges. By using offshore renewable energy, the project produces green hydrogen for conversion into ammonia and methanol, serving as clean marine fuels and industrial raw materials. The initiative, which started construction in September 2024, has passed China Classification Society's design compliance review. Its completion signifies a milestone in establishing technical specifications and standards for China's offshore hydrogen production sector, filling regulatory and operational framework gaps.
