Colombia's state-owned energy company, Ecopetrol, disclosed plans to establish a cutting-edge green hydrogen plant at its refinery in Cartagena, a city located in the Caribbean region, with an estimated investment of $28.5 million. This new facility is set to become the largest of its kind in Latin America, capable of generating 800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The initiative falls in line with President Gustavo Petro's commitment to steering Colombia away from fossil fuel dependence, with Ecopetrol also considering involvement in forthcoming offshore wind ventures. CEO Ricardo Roa emphasized Ecopetrol's transition to cleaner fuel production, citing the potential for low-emission hydrogen to significantly boost the company's earnings by 2040, projecting a substantial annual financial contribution. This strategic move by Ecopetrol not only signifies a shift towards sustainability and eco-friendliness in the energy sector of Colombia but also holds promise for advancing renewable energy initiatives in Latin America.
