Colombian energy authorities, led by the National hydrocarbons agency ANH, are gearing up for a competitive bidding process to harness the country's white hydrogen potential. This initiative is part of broader efforts to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy sources. ANH is in the process of outlining guidelines for an auction that will invite prospective investors to explore designated areas rich in white hydrogen resources. Regions such as La Guajira in the north, the Eastern plains, and parts of the Eastern and Central Cordillera ranges are among the targeted areas for exploration. The initiative to unlock Colombia's white hydrogen potential coincides with plans to produce green hydrogen from renewable energy sources. To facilitate green hydrogen production, ANH is also preparing for the region's first auction to grant concession rights for offshore wind projects. The energy generated from these projects will be utilized for electrolysis, a key process in green hydrogen production. This strategic move highlights Colombia's commitment to diversifying its energy mix and embracing sustainable practices in the power sector. By tapping into white hydrogen and green hydrogen production, Colombia aims to play a significant role in the energy transition landscape of Latin America.
