CS Energy, a state-owned generation company in Australia, has successfully launched a 100MW/200MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Chinchilla, Queensland. Costing around AU$150 million, this project will provide grid flexibility by connecting to the National Electricity Market. The collaboration between CS Energy, Tesla, and Downer resulted in the installation of 80 Tesla Megapack 2 systems as part of the Chinchilla BESS. In addition to the BESS, the Kogan Clean Energy Hub also features a Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant. This hydrogen plant integrates a 2MW solar farm, a 2MW/4MWh battery, an electrolyser, a fuel cell, hydrogen storage, and an out-loading facility. With an on-site hydrogen storage capacity of about 750kg, the plant has secured a deal to export hydrogen to the Republic of Palau through Sojitz Corporation. CS Energy's CEO emphasized the positive impact the project could have on the local community, highlighting the company's commitment to long-term sustainability. The use of Tesla Megapack technology in the Chinchilla BESS aligns with the broader trend of adopting large-scale battery energy storage systems in Queensland. This development reflects a positive step towards enhancing renewable energy infrastructure and promoting a more sustainable future for the region.
