CSX Leading the Charge Towards Zero Emission Locomotives with Hydrogen Innovation
Key Ideas
  • CSX aims to reduce GHG emissions by 37.3% by 2030 and pursue zero emissions by 2050, with a focus on eliminating diesel-powered equipment.
  • The development of a hydrogen locomotive prototype in partnership with CPKC marks a significant step towards sustainable motive power for CSX.
  • The hydrogen locomotive, converted from an existing GP38 model in Huntington, West Virginia, is being field tested for performance and efficiency.
  • CSX plans to continue developing hydrogen-powered locomotives to create a more efficient product line, aligning with long-term sustainability goals.
CSX is targeting a major reduction in greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and zero emissions by 2050. To meet these goals, the company is focusing on innovative technologies and alternative fuels. CSX unveiled a prototype hydrogen locomotive, a joint effort with Canadian Pacific Kansas City, which is set to be the first of its kind in the U.S. The hydrogen-powered locomotive emits only water vapor and operates using fuel cells, providing greater efficiency and zero emissions. The locomotive was developed by converting an existing GP38 model at CSX's Huntington shop in West Virginia. Field testing will evaluate its performance, with plans to continue developing the hydrogen product line for efficiency. The project involves a team of experts at the Huntington facility, showcasing a collaborative effort towards sustainable rail solutions.
