DESFA Partners with 5 Operators for Hydrogen Transmission Network to Germany
Key Ideas
  • DESFA collaborates with operators from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Slovenia to establish a hydrogen transmission network to supply Germany.
  • Discussions are in early stages, focusing on utilizing existing gas infrastructure and planning new infrastructure for the project.
  • Romania faces challenges in upgrading its network for hydrogen transport, while Greece plans to develop a parallel pipeline alongside its existing system.
  • Despite exclusion from DESFA's current development plan, the project shows potential for future integration with an existing hydrogen initiative in Greece.
Greek gas grid operator DESFA has joined hands with operators from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Slovenia to create a vast hydrogen transmission network reaching from Greece to Germany. The primary goal is to meet the high demand for hydrogen in the German market. Discussions are ongoing to leverage current gas infrastructure and identify the necessary new infrastructure. While Romania needs significant upgrades for hydrogen transport, Greece can initially use its existing network and is planning a parallel pipeline dedicated to hydrogen. Although the current project is not part of DESFA's ten-year development plan due to market conditions, there is a separate hydrogen initiative in the north of Greece that could potentially link with the larger network in the future.
