DEWA's Green Hydrogen Initiative: Pioneering Sustainable Mobility in Dubai
Key Ideas
  • DEWA's Green Hydrogen initiative at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park advances sustainable mobility in Dubai through the production and utilization of green hydrogen for energy production.
  • The project has supplied over 2.5 tons of green hydrogen to ENOC Group’s Service Station of the Future, reducing over 40 tons of CO2 emissions and fueling 500 vehicles.
  • Aligned with national strategies and Dubai's Green Mobility Strategy 2030, the initiative promotes sustainable transport solutions and contributes to the UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy.
  • DEWA's Green Hydrogen project is the Middle East's pioneering initiative producing green hydrogen through solar energy, with a vision to establish a foundation for a green economy and sustainable development in the region.
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched the Green Hydrogen initiative at its Research and Development (R&D) Centre within the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, making significant strides in sustainable mobility in Dubai. Since May 2021, the Green Hydrogen project has produced approximately 90 tons of green hydrogen, with a significant portion used for green energy production. Notably, over 2.5 tons of green hydrogen have been delivered to ENOC Group’s Service Station of the Future (SSoF) at Expo City Dubai, powering 500 vehicles and reducing over 40 tons of CO2 emissions. The SSoF is capable of fueling around 50 fuel-cell electric vehicles in just eight minutes per vehicle, offering green hydrogen, hydrocarbon fuels, and electric vehicle charging stations in the region. DEWA's green hydrogen station supplies hydrogen sourced from the project, establishing itself as a key player in promoting sustainable transport options. This initiative aligns with the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and supporting Dubai's goals of sustainability and air quality improvement. The Green Hydrogen project, a collaborative effort with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, pioneers the production of green hydrogen through solar energy in the Middle East and North Africa region. With a focus on future applications and testing platforms for hydrogen uses in various transport modes and industries, DEWA's initiative sets a path for a green economy and sustainable development in Dubai and beyond.
