Drift Energy, a UK startup, has recently obtained seed round funding to advance its groundbreaking idea of operating a fleet of sailing ships around the world to generate and supply green hydrogen. The company emphasizes the environmental benefits of producing hydrogen through electrolysis using renewable energy sources over traditional methods like steam methane reforming. By employing modern sailing vessels equipped with underwater turbines to harness energy, Drift Energy plans to power on-board electrolyzers to create and store green hydrogen, which can then be transferred to shore or bunker vessels for distribution. Their innovative approach includes utilizing AI technology to optimize vessel routing and maximize efficiency, a strategy they refer to as 'The Goldilocks Algorithm.' Drift Energy sees potential in supplying the green hydrogen to industries struggling to decarbonize, especially the shipping sector. The recent funding of £4.65 million received from Octopus Ventures and support from the Blue Action Accelerator and other notable entities will enable Drift Energy to progress with the vessel design program and move closer to realizing their mission. Founded in 2021, Drift Energy is poised to make a significant impact on the green hydrogen production landscape, with support from various institutions and investors including the UK government's Innovate UK.
