Driving Green Steel: India's National Green Hydrogen Mission in Action
Key Ideas
- The Union Government of India has approved three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to integrate hydrogen into steel production, aiming for low-carbon steel production.
- The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will oversee the pilot projects focusing on implementing green hydrogen technologies in steelmaking processes.
- Three pilot projects have been sanctioned, including a 50 TPD plant by Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, a 40 TPD plant by Simplex Castings Ltd, and a 3,200 TPD project by Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) in Ranchi.
- With a financial allocation of Rs. 347 crore, these projects are expected to be operational within three years, contributing to India's clean energy goals and positioning the country as a leader in green hydrogen technology.
The Union Government of India has approved three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to focus on incorporating hydrogen into steel production. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued guidelines for pilot projects in the steel sector to advance technologies that use green hydrogen in steelmaking processes. These projects aim to showcase the safe and efficient utilization of hydrogen-based processes in steel production, validate technical feasibility, evaluate performance, and assess economic viability for achieving low-carbon steel output. The three areas of focus for proposals include producing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) using 100% hydrogen, reducing coal and coke usage in blast furnaces through hydrogen integration, and injecting hydrogen into vertical shaft-based DRI production units. Following a rigorous evaluation, three pilot projects have been sanctioned, with participants like Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) in Ranchi. These projects, backed by a Rs. 347 crore financial support, are slated to be operational within the next three years, marking a significant step towards greener steel production in India. Launched in January 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission has a budget allocation of Rs. 19,744 crore until FY 2029-30, aiming to drive India's clean energy transformation and establish the country as a global leader in green hydrogen technology and market development.
