EDF Group and Abraxas Power Corp. to Develop 3-GW Green Hydrogen Project in Newfoundland
Key Ideas
  • Abraxas Power Corp. and EDF Group collaborate on a 3-GW power-to-X project in Newfoundland, Canada, to produce green hydrogen and ammonia using wind energy.
  • The Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corp. (EVREC) project aims to achieve a final investment decision in 2026, with construction scheduled from 2026 to 2030.
  • EDF's Hydrogen Plan targets developing 3 GW of hydrogen production globally by 2030, emphasizing the importance of low-carbon hydrogen to decarbonize the economy.
  • The EVREC project is expected to offset more than 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually, aligning with Canada's goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Abraxas Power Corp. and EDF Group have announced a collaboration to develop a 3-GW power-to-X (P2X) project in Newfoundland, Canada. The project will utilize wind energy to power electrolyzers, producing green hydrogen and ammonia with an annual output of up to 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. The Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corp. (EVREC) project, scheduled for construction from 2026 to 2030, also aims to produce 1 million tonnes of green ammonia annually. The companies plan to export the hydrogen and ammonia to global markets, primarily targeting Western Europe. The EVREC project aligns with Canada's objective of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. EDF's Hydrogen Plan, launched in 2022, aims to develop a minimum of 3 GW of hydrogen production worldwide by 2030, focusing on solutions like 100% low-carbon hydrogen to facilitate deep decarbonization. The partners anticipate that the EVREC project will help eliminate more than 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas reduction efforts. This initiative represents a substantial investment of approximately 12 billion CAD ($8.5 billion) and underscores the commitment of both companies to advancing green energy and addressing climate change challenges.
