EET Fuels Advances Low Carbon Process Refinery with Industrial Carbon Capture Project
Key Ideas
  • EET Fuels has progressed to the front-end engineering design stage of its industrial carbon capture project, aiming to become the world's leading low carbon process refinery.
  • Toyo Engineering India Pvt. Ltd. has been appointed to carry out the FEED phase, which includes design completion, project de-risking, and detailed costing analysis.
  • The industrial carbon capture project aims to capture around 1 million tons of CO2 per year, contributing to a 45% reduction in emissions from the Stanlow refinery.
  • The Company is also working on a hydrogen fuel switching project in parallel, showing momentum towards achieving a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions at the refinery by 2030.
EET Fuels, operating as Essar Oil (UK) Ltd, is moving forward with its plan to establish the world's leading low carbon process refinery by advancing its industrial carbon capture (ICC) project to the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage. Toyo Engineering India Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Toyo Engineering Corporation, has been tasked with overseeing the FEED phase to facilitate the final investment decision (FID) on the project. The ICC project, set to capture carbon dioxide emissions from the Stanlow refinery's FCC unit in Europe, is expected to capture approximately 1 million tons of CO2 annually. The captured CO2 will be sequestered into depleted gas fields in Liverpool Bay as part of the HyNet industrial decarbonisation cluster in North West England. The Company is seeking approval for a revenue support mechanism from the UK Government to aid in the project's development. Additionally, Wood has been appointed to conduct the FEED for EET Fuels' hydrogen fuel switching project, aligning with the Company's goal of significantly reducing CO2 emissions at the Stanlow Refinery by 95% by 2030. CEO Deepak Maheshwari expressed optimism about the carbon capture and storage plans, emphasizing their importance in securing the future of the refinery and reducing industrial carbon emissions in the region. This progress signifies a substantial step towards EET Fuels' vision of becoming the first low carbon process refinery globally. The Company's dedication to environmental sustainability and energy transition is evident through its multifaceted approach to emissions reduction and innovative projects.
