Egypt Launches Green Hydrogen Project with Norway and UAE Partners in Cairo
Key Ideas
  • The Sovereign Fund of Egypt and Orascom Construction partner with Norway's Scatec and UAE's Fertiglobe to establish a 100MW green hydrogen project at the port of Sokhna.
  • The project aims to produce 13,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which will be converted into 70,000 tonnes of green ammonia, contributing to renewable energy production.
  • Additional solar and wind plants with a 270MW capacity will be established as part of the project to enhance green energy generation in Egypt.
  • The agreement includes a 20-year deal with Fertiglobe for the sale of green ammonia, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy development in the region.
In Cairo, Egypt, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) and Orascom Construction have joined forces with Norway's Scatec and UAE-based Fertiglobe to launch a pioneering green hydrogen project at the port of Sokhna. The project, initiated in 2021, targets the annual production of 13,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, to be later transformed into 70,000 tonnes of green ammonia using renewable energy sources. Ayman Soliman, CEO of TSFE, highlighted that the endeavor includes the establishment of solar and wind plants with a collective capacity of 270MW, indicating a substantial commitment to sustainable energy practices. Noteworthy is the long-term agreement with Fertiglobe for the sale of green ammonia over two decades, signifying a stable market for eco-friendly products. The successful operation of the pilot phase during COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh further underscores Egypt's dedication to green hydrogen initiatives. Concurrently, at the Egypt-EU Investment Conference 2024, agreements were inked between various entities to promote green hydrogen and green ammonia production. Orascom Construction and Fertiglobe reported positive financial outcomes in the first quarter of 2024, reflecting the sector's growth potential. The collaborations and investments in green hydrogen projects depict a positive trajectory towards sustainable energy practices and economic development in Egypt.
