Egypt's Collaboration with Hynfra to Develop Green Ammonia Production Facility
Key Ideas
  • Egypt's General Authority for Investment partners with Hynfra to establish a $1.6bn green ammonia production facility by 2030.
  • The plant will utilize Egypt's solar and wind energy to produce green ammonia, supporting the country's renewable energy objectives.
  • Hynfra plans to introduce advanced technology for green hydrogen production and aims to export the entire green ammonia output to the European Union.
  • The collaboration aligns with EU's strategy to import significant amounts of green hydrogen and green ammonia by 2030, positioning Egypt as a key player in sustainable energy supply.
Egypt's General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) has partnered with the Polish company Hynfra to develop a $1.6bn green ammonia production facility. The first phase aims to produce 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, with a long-term goal of scaling up to one million tonnes per year. Hynfra plans to establish five green ammonia production facilities in Central and Eastern Europe, selecting Egypt as the flagship location. The plant will leverage Egypt's solar and wind energy to power the production process and contribute surplus electricity to the national grid. Additionally, Hynfra intends to introduce cutting-edge technology for green hydrogen production, energy storage systems, and water desalination in Egypt. By combining hydrogen with nitrogen, green ammonia will be produced and exported to the EU under long-term agreements. This collaboration reflects Egypt's advancements in becoming a hub for green hydrogen and ammonia, supported by legislative measures and strategic initiatives like the Green Hydrogen Production Projects Incentives Law. The President highlighted Egypt's support for renewable energy projects and streamlining approval processes, ensuring comprehensive backing for Hynfra's endeavors.
