GERG is actively engaged in fostering the European energy transition by championing innovative solutions to maintain the centrality of gas infrastructure. The organization, with 33 members across 15 countries, supports projects focused on delivering competitive, secure, and sustainable paths for Europe's energy transformation. Key research priorities include hydrogen, identified as a clean energy carrier with the potential to decarbonize challenging sectors like transport, industry, and buildings. Additionally, GERG emphasizes biomethane production as a carbon-neutral contributor to the EU's decarbonization goals. Mitigating methane emissions throughout the gas supply chain is also highlighted as crucial in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The adoption of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is endorsed for enhancing energy security through supply diversification and reducing air pollution in maritime activities. Furthermore, GERG's commitment to optimizing gas infrastructure and end-use ensures the continued efficiency and relevance of Europe's extensive gas network in the evolving energy sector landscape.
