Empowering Tanzania's Maritime Sector with Green Hydrogen: A Collaborative Initiative
Key Ideas
  • ZESTAs and TEEMO signed an MOU to develop green hydrogen shipping fuel in Tanzania, focusing on production, infrastructure, and vessel development.
  • The partnership leverages Tanzania's renewable energy potential and strategic maritime location to advance sustainability and support global decarbonization.
  • The collaboration includes local training programs, partnership with a German organization, and alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • TEEMO will engage stakeholders, while ZESTAs will provide technical support and industry connections for successful project implementation.
The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) and Tanzania’s Environment and Empowerment Movement (TEEMO) have joined forces through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to propel the development of green hydrogen shipping fuel in Tanzania. The initiative targets the creation of a sustainable maritime sector in Tanzania by concentrating on green hydrogen production, bunkering infrastructure, vessel development, and local training programs to cultivate expertise. By capitalizing on Tanzania's renewable energy potential and favorable maritime positioning, the partnership aspires to play a role in the global shipping industry's decarbonization. Collaborating with TEEMO, ZESTAs has also teamed up with a German organization specializing in hydrogen projects to ensure the successful execution of projects in Tanzania, emphasizing communication alignment and adherence to strict timelines. Madadh MacLaine, ZESTAs' Secretary-General, underlined the significance of green hydrogen as a genuinely zero-emission and pollution-free fuel for shipping. He highlighted that besides supporting environmental objectives, this endeavor would generate economic opportunities in harmony with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The MOU dictates that ZESTAs will provide technical support and industry connections, while TEEMO will involve various stakeholders on the ground, including government officials, logistics experts, and port authorities. Winfrida Shonde of TEEMO expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it resonates with their commitment to environmental conservation and community empowerment through innovative, climate-resilient endeavors.
