Enagás Reveals Insights from Spain's Renewable Hydrogen Market Development
Key Ideas
  • Enagás announced results of the Call For Interest process, aiding in the analysis of Spain's renewable hydrogen market potential and affirming plans for a hydrogen backbone infrastructure by 2030.
  • 206 companies with 650 projects participated in the consultation, defining three potential renewable hydrogen supply and demand scenarios for 2030.
  • Results confirmed key infrastructures for renewable hydrogen in Spain like the Cantabrian Coast Axis and identified new areas of production and demand aggregation.
  • Interest in other molecules like ammonia and CO2 capture processes was also noted, expanding the focus beyond just hydrogen in the industry's plans.
Enagás has disclosed the outcomes of the recent Call For Interest process conducted in the last quarter of 2023 at its 2nd Hydrogen Day in January 2024. This consultation, involving 206 companies with 650 projects, has provided valuable insights into Spain's renewable hydrogen market. The analysis, audited by Bureau Veritas, has facilitated the identification of three potential scenarios for renewable hydrogen supply and demand by 2030. The data obtained from this consultation is instrumental in accelerating the establishment of a competitive hydrogen market in Spain and Europe. Enagás has ratified its proposal to develop a hydrogen backbone infrastructure by 2030, aligning with the European Union's list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI). The mature projects selected in the Call For Interest scenario have helped in defining the approximate figures for production and consumption, with a focus on domestic consumption. The results of the Call for Interest have not only confirmed existing infrastructures like the Cantabrian Coast Axis but have also highlighted new areas for production and demand aggregation. Moreover, the industry's interest extends beyond renewable hydrogen to include other molecules such as ammonia and CO2 capture processes, indicating a broader perspective on sustainable energy solutions. Enagás' efforts have not only shed light on Spain's renewable hydrogen market potential but have also set the stage for strategic infrastructure development, contributing to the energy transition in line with the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC). The industry's active participation and interest in diverse sustainable energy avenues showcase a positive outlook towards a greener future.
