EnBW, a utility in Germany, has announced an investment of €1 billion in the country's planned national hydrogen transport network. The goal of this infrastructure, expected to be operational by 2032, is to facilitate the transportation of newly produced and imported hydrogen as a clean alternative to fossil fuels in various industries and consumer applications. Germany is looking to decrease its dependence on oil and natural gas to reduce carbon emissions, with a focus on clean hydrogen production and importation. The country recognizes the importance of renewable electricity for hydrogen production through electrolysis. Since Germany's land resources for renewable energy are limited, it is expected that around 70% of future hydrogen will be imported from regions with ample and cost-effective production capabilities. The national approval process for the hydrogen network has been initiated by the energy regulator, Bundesnetzagentur. The project involves an extensive network of pipelines covering 9666 km and costing approximately €19.7 billion. These pipelines are designed to deliver a substantial amount of hydrogen annually, aiming to meet a significant portion of Germany's gas usage. Funding for the project will be partially supported by amortisation accounts to distribute costs across generations. Operators will finance the project from their balance sheets and recover costs through network fees. The plan includes converting existing natural gas pipelines to hydrogen operations, along with building new hydrogen pipelines. EnBW, along with its subsidiaries, plans to connect regional transport lines in eastern and southwestern Germany initially, with future expansion in other areas. Additionally, Berlin's grid operator, Gasag, has proposed converting 60 km of the city's gas pipelines to hydrogen operation. The project signals a significant step towards achieving Germany's climate goals and transitioning to a more sustainable energy ecosystem.
