ENEOS to Build Green Hydrogen Plant in Queensland with Japanese Partners
Key Ideas
  • ENEOS, Japan's largest oil company, plans to construct a $200 million green hydrogen plant in Bulwer Island, Queensland, producing 680kg of green hydrogen daily from 2026.
  • The project highlights Queensland's energy superpower status and will create over 100 new specialist jobs in the state's growing green hydrogen industry.
  • ENEOS is partnering with Japanese companies and local Brisbane-based firms for the construction, with support from the Japanese government's GI Fund.
  • The green hydrogen will be produced in the form of MCH, a liquid hydrogen carrier, with part of the production to be exported to Japan, utilizing innovative technology for storage and transport.
ENEOS, Japan's largest oil company, is set to build a $200 million green hydrogen plant in Bulwer Island, Queensland, as part of its initiative to increase green hydrogen production. The plant is expected to produce 680 kilograms of green hydrogen daily from 2026, showcasing Queensland's position as an energy superpower. This project will create over 100 specialist jobs in the state's growing green hydrogen industry. The green hydrogen will be in the form of methylcyclohexane (MCH), a hydrogen carrier in liquid form that allows for easy storage and transport at room temperature and normal pressure. The construction of the plant is set to begin next year, with production expected to start by mid-2026. ENEOS is working in collaboration with Japanese companies and local Brisbane-based firms on this project, supported by the Japanese government's GI Fund. The project, commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, aims to demonstrate innovative technology for green hydrogen production and transportation, with a portion of the MCH to be exported to Japan.
