Energie AG, Austria's top electricity and gas network operator, is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to repurpose parts of the country's natural gas pipeline for hydrogen integration. The company has entrusted Netz Oberösterreich with the task of repurposing the pipeline section between Linz and Sattledt, aiming to create a dual-use system where one strand carries natural gas and the other transports hydrogen. This innovative approach signifies a significant step towards green energy, with the new hydrogen pipeline capable of powering up to 170 MW, equivalent to Linz's district heating power plant capacity. To achieve this dual-use system, Energie AG requires an amendment to the operating permit, which must undergo review and approval by the regional government. The company's Chief Technical Officer, Alexander Kirchner, highlighted the strategic importance of the project, emphasizing green hydrogen as a crucial element in Energie AG's vision for a renewable energy future. The move towards repurposing existing infrastructure for hydrogen aligns with Austria's broader renewable energy goals. Austria's recent introduction of a €400 million subsidy package, supported by the European Hydrogen Bank, further reinforces the nation's commitment to renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure development.
