Essar Energy Transition Launches Europe's First Hydrogen-Ready Power Plant at Stanlow Refinery
Key Ideas
- EET Hydrogen Power is set to be Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant, aiming to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tons annually.
- The project aligns with EET Fuels' goal of becoming the world's lowest carbon process refinery by cutting emissions by 95% by 2030.
- EET's investment of $3.0 billion in energy transition initiatives in the North West of England includes the development of 1.35+ GW of blue and green hydrogen capacity.
- The launch of EET Hydrogen Power reflects Essar Energy Transition's commitment to advancing the UK's low carbon energy sector and supporting regional emissions reduction targets.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has introduced Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant, EET Hydrogen Power, at its Stanlow refinery in the UK. The project aims to complete construction by 2027 and will support EET Fuels' ambition to become the lowest carbon process refinery globally. EET Hydrogen Power will replace hydrocarbons with hydrogen, resulting in a remarkable reduction of 740,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The plant's development over two phases will reach a capacity of 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, subsequently replacing Stanlow's existing boiler units. EET Fuels plans to slash emissions by 95% by 2030, positioning itself as the world's lowest carbon refinery. This initiative is crucial for decarbonizing operations and supporting the broader HyNet industrial cluster's decarbonization plans. EET's investment further includes developing 1.35+ GW of blue and green hydrogen capacity, emphasizing their commitment to low carbon energy initiatives in the region. Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of Essar Energy Transition, highlighted the significance of EET Hydrogen Power in advancing the UK's low carbon energy objectives. Rob Wallace, CEO of EET Hydrogen Power, emphasized the project's role in contributing to regional emissions reduction targets and establishing Stanlow as a low carbon transition hub. The launch of EET Hydrogen Power showcases Essar Energy Transition's dedication to decarbonizing high emitting industries and promoting green energy solutions.
