Essar Energy Transition to Build Europe's First 100% Hydrogen-Fuelled Power Plant in the UK by 2027
Key Ideas
  • Essar Energy Transition to construct Europe's inaugural 100% hydrogen-powered plant at Stanlow Refinery in the UK by 2027, aligning with government emission reduction goals.
  • The project aims to replace hydrocarbons with hydrogen, cutting 740,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, integral to reducing Stanlow Refinery's emissions by 95% before 2030.
  • EET's investment of USD 3 billion in low carbon initiatives in North West England includes EET Hydrogen Power, contributing to industrial and power decarbonisation.
  • The creation of Europe's first hydrogen-ready gas-turbine plant utilizing low carbon hydrogen will significantly aid regional emissions reduction targets and showcase decarbonisation pathways.
Essar Energy Transition, a part of the Essar Group, has announced plans to build Europe's first 100% hydrogen-fuelled power plant at its Stanlow Refinery in the UK by 2027. The project, known as EET Hydrogen Power, is a crucial step towards decarbonising the industry and power system in the UK, in alignment with government targets for emission reduction. The plant, with a capacity of 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, will replace the existing boiler units at Stanlow, resulting in a significant reduction of 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. This initiative forms a key part of Essar Energy Transition's USD 3 billion investment in low carbon projects in North West England, emphasizing the company's commitment to promoting energy transition. EET Hydrogen Power will support the decarbonisation plans of the wider HyNet industrial cluster and create high-skilled employment opportunities in the region. The project is led by Tony Fountain and Rob Wallace, emphasizing the company's dedication to advancing low carbon energy and showcasing a pathway for decarbonising high emitting industries.
