EU Commission Launches 4.6 Billion Euro Initiative to Boost Green Technologies
Key Ideas
- European Commission launched auctions and calls for proposals totaling 4.6 billion euros to promote decarbonization technologies, electric vehicle battery cells, and renewable hydrogen in the EEA.
- Calls for proposals and auctions are funded by the Innovation Fund, utilizing revenues from the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, aiming to boost European industry resilience.
- The initiatives include specific resilience criteria to reduce dependency on single suppliers, enhancing Europe's industrial leadership and competitiveness while supporting net-zero emission technologies.
- Deadlines for applications are April 24, 2025, for the Innovation Fund calls, and February 20, 2025, for the renewable hydrogen auction, emphasizing the importance of consulting call documents prior to application.
The European Commission has initiated a comprehensive plan to promote green technologies in Europe, focusing on decarbonization, electric vehicle battery cells, and renewable hydrogen production in the European Economic Area (EEA). With a total budget of 4.6 billion euros, the Commission launched two calls for proposals and an auction. The calls aim to support net-zero emission technologies and battery cell production for electric vehicles with a budget of 3.4 billion euros from the Innovation Fund, funded by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme proceeds. Additionally, a separate auction through the European Hydrogen Bank will accelerate renewable hydrogen production in the EEA, receiving a budget of 1.2 billion euros from the EU funds and over 700 million euros from member states. The initiatives include new resilience criteria to enhance European industry's competitiveness and reduce dependency on single suppliers. Teresa Ribera Rodríguez, Executive Vice President for a Clean, Just, and Competitive Transition, highlighted the importance of boosting Europe's industrial leadership and strategic autonomy through these initiatives. The calls for proposals encompass projects of various scales, including those focused on components for renewable energy, energy storage, and hydrogen production, emphasizing criteria such as greenhouse gas emissions reduction, innovation, replicability, and cost efficiency. Furthermore, there is a separate 1 billion euro call for electric vehicle battery cell production and an auction to allocate 1.2 billion euros specifically for renewable hydrogen production. The deadlines for application submissions are April 24, 2025, for the Innovation Fund calls and February 20, 2025, for the renewable hydrogen auction. The EU executive recommends project proponents to thoroughly review call documents and the 'Questions and Answers' section on the EU funding and procurement portal before applying.
