The European Union has pledged R628 million (approximately €32 million) to support the sustainable development of green hydrogen value chains in South Africa. This commitment was announced by the European Commissioner for Energy, the South African Minister for Electricity and Energy, and the Minister of the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition. The grants, totaling €32 million, aim to increase investments in green hydrogen infrastructure, create jobs, provide water treatment, and enhance access to green energy. By leveraging private and public sector finance, the EU grants are expected to advance hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and downstream industries, ultimately contributing to global emission reduction. The collaboration intends to boost sustainable development, promote local economic growth, and elevate South Africa in the green hydrogen value chains. Additionally, a separate EU grant of €6.9 million is designated to support Transnet in its green hydrogen project, focusing on transforming core operational areas to incorporate low-carbon hydrogen production and storage. The initiative aligns with the EU Global Gateway strategy, aiming to foster smart, clean, and secure energy and transport connections. The partnership between the EU and South Africa emphasizes renewable energy infrastructure, energy efficiency improvement, and sustainable practices. Notably, South Africa's potential as a hub for green fuels in the Global South is highlighted, with opportunities to supply green fuels to countries in the Global North through innovative initiatives like green shipping corridors.
