The European Union is investing in green transport infrastructure across its member states through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). A total of 39 projects will receive funding to develop charging points for electric vehicles, hydrogen refuelling stations, and electrify ports and airports. The EU Transport Commissioner, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, highlighted the importance of accelerating the development of critical infrastructure to support zero-emission fleets and contribute to a cleaner environment. Germany is actively involved in the projects, with BP Europe and E.ON Drive Infrastructure coordinating initiatives. The focus is on expanding charging infrastructure for various vehicle types, with a notable emphasis on hydrogen refuelling stations for long-distance transport. Besides road transport, the funding extends to electrifying ports and airports, enhancing ground handling services at airports, installing shore power systems at ports, and establishing bunkering stations for alternative maritime fuels like ammonia and methanol. The funding program aims to drive the decarbonisation of the European transport sector and provide approximately 5,000 new charging points and 35 hydrogen refuelling stations to support the transition to zero-emission vehicles. Overall, the EU's investment in green transport infrastructure signifies a significant step towards promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly transport solutions.
