European Commission Approves State Aid Schemes for Renewable Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • €400m Austrian and €36m Lithuanian state aid schemes approved to support renewable hydrogen production.
  • Schemes aligned with Clean Industrial Deal and REPowerEU Plan to accelerate decarbonisation and reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels.
  • Austria and Lithuania to produce 112,000 and 13,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen respectively.
  • Funding through the European Hydrogen Bank's 'Auctions-as-a-Service' tool for auction closing in 2025.
The European Commission has given the green light to a €400 million state aid scheme in Austria and a €36 million scheme in Lithuania to bolster the production of renewable hydrogen. These funding initiatives are in line with the Clean Industrial Deal and the REPowerEU Plan, both aiming to advance the decarbonisation of the EU industry while enhancing its competitiveness and decreasing reliance on Russian fossil fuels. The schemes will also contribute to the EU Hydrogen Strategy. Austria and Lithuania have informed the Commission about their plans to implement programs that will support the production of renewable hydrogen using the 'Auctions-as-a-Service' tool provided by the European Hydrogen Bank. The approved schemes are expected to generate up to 112,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen in Austria and 13,000 tonnes in Lithuania. This positive development signals a significant step towards achieving the EU's sustainability goals and promoting the green transition in the region.
