Key Ideas
  • The European Commission is offering EUR 600 million for projects under the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy to support energy infrastructure development.
  • Projects on the first list of Projects of Common Interest and Projects of Mutual Interest focused on power interconnections, offshore grids, hydrogen production-distribution networks, and carbon capture and storage networks are eligible.
  • Funding proposals for studies and construction works can be submitted until September 16, with results expected early next year.
  • The grants aim to intensify investments in energy projects to enhance energy security, competitiveness, and reduce energy costs across Europe.
The European Commission has launched a new call for proposals under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Energy, offering EUR 600 million to support projects related to energy infrastructure development. The funding is dedicated to projects listed under the revised Trans-European Networks for Energy Regulation, focusing on power interconnections, offshore grids, hydrogen production-distribution networks, and carbon capture and storage networks. Developers have until September 16 to submit funding proposals for studies and construction works, with results expected in early 2023. The EU Energy and Housing Commissioner emphasized the importance of intensifying investments to ensure a genuine Energy Union, stating that it is crucial for enhancing competitiveness, energy security, and reducing energy costs. The previous call awarded nearly EUR 1.25 billion to 41 projects, with a significant portion allocated to power grid projects, including the Bornholm Energy Island project in the Baltic Sea. In addition to supporting power grid projects, the grants also aim to decarbonize EU industry by providing funding for hydrogen infrastructure development studies in multiple European countries. Furthermore, funding has been allocated for carbon capture and storage projects, including the Prinos storage facility in Greece. The European Commission's initiative aims to advance sustainable energy infrastructure and contribute to the EU's energy goals.
