The European Commission has announced a substantial investment of nearly €1.25bn through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for various energy initiatives, highlighting a significant focus on hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) projects. The funding includes €750m for enhancing electricity grid infrastructure, notably supporting projects like the Bornholm Energy island endeavor, which involves constructing an underwater power cable to link Denmark and Germany and facilitate offshore wind energy transmission. Furthermore, around €250m is designated for 21 hydrogen development projects spanning across countries like Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and the Baltic region, aiming to establish vital hydrogen corridors. An equivalent amount will be channeled into building carbon dioxide (CO2) infrastructure, with investments in storage facilities in Greece, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Dan Jørgensen, Commissioner for Energy and Housing, lauded this funding as the highest ever awarded under the CEF for energy infrastructure projects, emphasizing the pivotal role of hydrogen and offshore electricity grids in decarbonising economies. The funding decision, approved by Member States and the CEF Coordination Committee, is poised to accelerate decarbonisation efforts, with CINEA preparing grant agreements for upcoming projects in the pipeline.
