Exxon Mobil and Air Liquide have joined forces in a major agreement to establish a groundbreaking low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production initiative at Exxon's Baytown facility in Texas. The collaboration aims to create the world's largest hydrogen facility with the capacity to generate 1 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of low-carbon hydrogen on a daily basis. The project envisions the transportation of this hydrogen through Air Liquide's established pipeline network, showcasing a significant leap towards sustainable energy solutions. With a strong focus on emissions reduction, the facility plans to capture an impressive 98% of the associated CO2 emissions. President of Exxon's low carbon solutions, Dan Ammann, expressed enthusiasm for the momentum surrounding the project and the growing hydrogen market. The partnership with Air Liquide adds value by facilitating hydrogen distribution via existing networks and ensuring vital feedstock security. In parallel, Air Liquide will set up and manage four large modular air separation units to provide essential oxygen and nitrogen supplies, amounting to 9,000 metric tons of oxygen and up to 6,500 metric tons of nitrogen daily. These units will prioritize sourcing low-carbon electricity to minimize the project's overall carbon footprint, aligning with the sustainability goals of the initiative. The collaborative efforts between Exxon Mobil and Air Liquide represent a significant step forward in advancing low-carbon hydrogen production and reinforcing the position of Baytown as a key player in the emerging hydrogen sector.
