ExxonMobil and Air Liquide Partner for Low-Carbon Hydrogen and Ammonia Production in Baytown, Texas
Key Ideas
  • ExxonMobil and Air Liquide have agreed to support low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production at ExxonMobil's Baytown facility near Houston, aiming to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Air Liquide will construct and operate Large Modular Air separation units using low-carbon electricity to supply oxygen and nitrogen to the facility.
  • The partnership will facilitate the transportation of low-carbon hydrogen through Air Liquide's pipeline network, contributing to the growth of a low-carbon hydrogen market in the U.S. Gulf Coast.
  • ExxonMobil's planned hydrogen production facility in Baytown is set to be the world's largest, producing significant amounts of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia while capturing a high percentage of CO2 emissions.
ExxonMobil and Air Liquide have announced a partnership to support the production of low-carbon hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia at ExxonMobil’s facility in Baytown, Texas, located near Houston. The collaboration aims to enhance the emerging hydrogen market by leveraging existing infrastructure and sustainable practices. Air Liquide will build and operate Large Modular Air separation units (LMAs) powered by low-carbon electricity to provide oxygen and nitrogen to the facility. This initiative is designed to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the project. The planned hydrogen production facility in Baytown is expected to be the largest globally, producing 1 billion cubic feet of low-carbon hydrogen daily and over 1 million tons of ammonia annually while capturing more than 98% of associated CO2 emissions. By partnering with Air Liquide, ExxonMobil aims to facilitate the growth of a low-carbon hydrogen market along the U.S. Gulf Coast, supporting industrial customers in their decarbonization efforts. The agreement signifies a step towards sustainable industrial operations and marks a significant milestone in the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
