ExxonMobil and Air Liquide Partner to Lead Low-Carbon Hydrogen Project in Texas
Key Ideas
  • ExxonMobil and Air Liquide collaborate to produce low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia in Baytown, Texas.
  • Air Liquide to construct four Large Modular Air separation units to support the project, aiming for sustainability through low-carbon electricity use.
  • The planned facility is set to be the world's largest low-carbon hydrogen production site, with significant daily output and emissions reduction goals.
  • ExxonMobil and Air Liquide partnership aims to boost the low-carbon hydrogen market growth along the US Gulf Coast for industrial decarbonization.
ExxonMobil and Air Liquide have recently announced a strategic partnership to facilitate the production of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia at ExxonMobil’s Baytown facility in Texas. This collaboration includes the establishment of a massive low-carbon hydrogen production plant, which is anticipated to become the world's largest facility of its kind. The agreement also involves Air Liquide constructing and operating four Large Modular Air separation units (LMAs) to supply significant amounts of oxygen and nitrogen to the facility on a daily basis. These units will prioritize the use of low-carbon electricity to minimize the project's carbon footprint. Dan Ammann, President of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, expressed enthusiasm about the growing momentum behind this ambitious project, emphasizing the positive impacts on the emerging hydrogen market. The alliance with Air Liquide is expected to reinforce the Baytown project by facilitating hydrogen distribution through existing networks and ensuring a stable supply of vital feedstocks. The planned hydrogen production facility aims to produce a substantial amount of low-carbon hydrogen daily, alongside a significant volume of ammonia annually, while implementing measures to capture over 98% of the associated CO2 emissions. Through this collaboration, ExxonMobil and Air Liquide are striving to foster the expansion of a low-carbon hydrogen market in the US Gulf Coast region, ultimately supporting industrial clients in their efforts to decarbonize operations. The joint efforts of these industry giants signal a significant step towards promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions in the energy and industrial sectors.
