FCHRAIL Wins Best Innovation Award at European Hydrogen Week in Brussels
Key Ideas
- The EU project FCHRAIL, focusing on a hybrid drive for trains, won the Best Innovation Award at the European Hydrogen Week in Brussels.
- The technology developed by industry and research participants enables climate-friendly rail transport previously serviced by diesel vehicles.
- CAF and CNH2 created a test system for fuel cell hybrid PowerPacks to optimize system performance, validated as part of the FCH2RAIL project.
- The award was received by representatives from CNH2, CAF, and DLR during the ceremony, acknowledging their contribution to sustainable rail transport.
The EU project FCHRAIL, coordinated by DLR, was recently honored with the Best Innovation Award at the European Hydrogen Week in Brussels. This project, named FCH2Rail, aimed to develop a hybrid drive for trains that would facilitate climate-friendly rail transport in urban and suburban areas, replacing the traditional diesel vehicles. The technology created by a consortium of industry and research partners has paved the way for sustainable and continuous rail transport. Additionally, CAF and CNH2 collaborated to design a test system for fuel cell hybrid PowerPacks, eliminating the need for a real train in testing. This system was crucial in validating the performance of different components and optimizing energy management. The award ceremony, which took place on 20 November 2024, saw Joanna Drake presenting the award to representatives from CNH2 and CAF, along with the project coordinator DLR. Their innovative contributions towards advancing clean energy solutions for rail transport were recognized and celebrated during the event.
