GAIL and Accelera by Cummins Collaborate on Green Hydrogen and Energy Transition in India
Key Ideas
  • GAIL and Accelera by Cummins have signed an MoU to collaborate on hydrogen and energy transition technologies in India, focusing on hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage.
  • GAIL has advanced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 net-zero targets from 2040 to 2035 and commissioned a 10 MW green hydrogen unit at its plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The collaboration aims to facilitate hydrogen's application across various sectors like transport, power, and steel, and explore its use as a mono-fuel or in blends with LNG, CNG, and natural gas.
  • In addition to green hydrogen, GAIL is expanding its clean energy initiatives with projects like setting up compressed biogas (CBG) plants, grain-based ethanol plants, and partnering for synthetic natural gas production.
GAIL (India) Limited and Accelera by Cummins have entered into a collaboration to work on hydrogen and energy transition technologies in India. This partnership, signed at India Energy Week 2025, aims to explore opportunities in hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage. GAIL has accelerated its net-zero targets to 2035 and recently inaugurated a 10 MW green hydrogen unit in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, using an electrolyser from Accelera by Cummins. The agreement between GAIL and Accelera by Cummins will allow for the advancement of hydrogen applications in various sectors such as transport, power, and steel. The focus will be on utilizing hydrogen as a mono-fuel or blending it with LNG, CNG, and natural gas. Additionally, the collaboration will work on infrastructure development for hydrogen production, transportation, and storage. Besides their hydrogen initiatives, GAIL is actively expanding its clean energy projects. They have set up a compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Ranchi and plan to establish more CBG plants in the coming years. Joint ventures are also in progress for grain-based ethanol production and synthetic natural gas production. The overall aim is to enhance sustainable energy solutions and reduce carbon emissions in the energy sector.
