Galp's Sines Refinery in Portugal is at the forefront of sustainable energy transformation with two significant projects underway. The Biofuels unit, funded with €250 million and supported by a €430 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), will focus on producing low-carbon fuels crucial for decarbonizing transportation, particularly in aviation. This initiative aims to convert vegetable oils and residual fats into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector. In parallel, the Green Hydrogen production unit, with an investment of €180 million, is set to become one of the largest in Europe, producing up to 15 ktpa of green hydrogen. These projects not only support the goal of climate neutrality by 2050 and the EU's energy independence but also demonstrate a commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability. The EIB's support and the collaboration with partners like Mitsui highlight the importance of public and private sector cooperation in driving impactful energy transition projects.
