Gangwon Province in South Korea is focusing on expanding investments in eco-friendly energy industries and developing alternative industries for abandoned mines. The province has made remarkable progress in the hydrogen sector, with Donghae and Samcheok being designated as Korea's primary hydrogen specialization complex and opportunity development special zone. Key achievements include the establishment of a basic plan for the hydrogen storage and transport cluster East Sea project and the construction of the Liquefied Hydrogen Reliability Evaluation Center. The government is now gearing up to attract more hydrogen companies, support ongoing hydrogen projects, and build a network in the hydrogen industry to ensure smooth progress. Additionally, plans are underway to create a mid- to long-term development plan for abandoned mines from 2026 to 2030. The province has reorganized departments and enacted ordinances to utilize coal ore from these mines for construction materials. Jeong Il-seop, head of Gangwon-do Global Headquarters, emphasizes the importance of cooperation projects and alternative industries in abandoned mines, signaling a positive and proactive approach towards sustainable development.
