Gensol Engineering and Matrix Gas & Renewables Collaborate on Green Steel Production Facility Using Green Hydrogen in India
Key Ideas
- Gensol Engineering and Matrix Gas & Renewables partner for a green steel production facility in India using 100% green hydrogen and DRI technology.
- The project is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission with 50% CAPEX incentives from the Indian government, aiming to eliminate CO2 emissions in steel manufacturing.
- Matrix Gas & Renewables, Gensol Engineering, IIT Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB will collaborate on a 50 TPD pilot project for clean iron production.
- The Indian government is promoting green steel by mandating its use in government projects to reduce carbon emissions in the steel sector.
Gensol Engineering has joined forces with Matrix Gas & Renewables to establish a green steel production facility in India. This innovative project will utilize 100% green hydrogen and direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology to convert iron ore into sponge iron, aiming to eliminate CO2 emissions. The initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and has received approval from the Ministries of Steel and New and Renewable Energy. With an estimated capital expenditure of ₹3.21 billion, the project benefits from 50% CAPEX incentives provided by the Indian government. The collaboration involves key players such as Matrix Gas & Renewables, Gensol Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB (Sweden) to work on this 50 tons per day (TPD) pilot project. The objective is to develop green steel factories in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and other regions in India, focusing on clean iron production without the use of fossil fuels. Additionally, MECON, a government enterprise, has initiated a request for proposal for pilot projects on green hydrogen injection in existing blast furnaces and DRI units. The government's plan to mandate green steel usage in its projects reflects a commitment to decarbonize the challenging steel sector, thereby promoting sustainability and carbon neutrality.
