Gensol Engineering Ltd. and Matrix Gas & Renewables Consortium to Develop India's First Green Hydrogen-Powered Steel Facility
Key Ideas
- The project aims to develop India's first green hydrogen-powered steel facility using renewable energy sources.
- The utilization of green hydrogen will replace fossil fuels in sponge iron production, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
- The consortium includes Matrix Gas & Renewables Ltd., Gensol Engineering Ltd., IIT Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB (Sweden), working towards establishing similar green steel plants across different regions in India.
Gensol Engineering Ltd. and Matrix Gas & Renewables Ltd. consortium have been awarded a project to develop India's First Green Hydrogen-Powered Steel Facility. This innovative approach, specifically designed for Indian-grade ore, aims to support Matrix's broader goal of establishing green steel plants for medium- to small-scale producers in various regions including Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Traditionally, the sponge iron production process relies on fossil fuels, leading to significant CO2 emissions. However, by utilizing green hydrogen produced from renewable sources, this new method will replace coal and natural gas, effectively eliminating CO2 emissions and marking a significant advancement in clean iron production. The consortium, which includes Matrix Gas & Renewables Ltd., Gensol Engineering Ltd., Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB (Sweden), will collaborate on this pilot plant with a capacity of 50 tons per day. Matrix will oversee the entire project, from land acquisition to the development of supporting infrastructure, aligning with the Government of India's vision for a sustainable future and reinforcing the nation's commitment to green energy solutions and industrial enhancement. This project not only showcases Matrix's expertise in delivering innovative energy solutions but also signifies a crucial step towards sustainable steel production in India.
