Germany and France Collaborate on Advancing Hydrogen Economy Through Joint Projects
Key Ideas
  • Germany and France are jointly funding hydrogen projects to support the development of a hydrogen economy.
  • The projects focus on innovations in electrochemical hydrogen production, infrastructure, and system integration.
  • Research initiatives aim to create high-performance, cost-effective components, develop hydrogen infrastructure, and harmonize hydrogen introduction in the EU.
  • The collaborative efforts are expected to contribute to a future cross-sector hydrogen economy in France, Germany, and Europe.
Germany and France are collaboratively funding innovative hydrogen projects to accelerate the development of a hydrogen economy. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR) have launched a joint call for research initiatives with a budget of 1.5 – 2.5 million euros per project over three years. The projects involve at least one German and one French research institution working together to address key challenges in the hydrogen sector. The initiatives cover areas such as electrochemical hydrogen production, hydrogen infrastructure, and hydrogen system integration. The funding supports projects with German and French partners engaging in industry-related basic research to advance technology in the hydrogen space. The collaborations are expected to generate innovative research contributions for a future cross-sector hydrogen economy in France, Germany, and Europe. Various projects like IDEAS, CrossHy, MINDSET, FFWD, and HADES are aimed at developing technologies ranging from high-performance system components to creating a necessary hydrogen infrastructure in both countries. These initiatives also focus on harmonizing hydrogen introduction in the EU, developing efficient water electrolysis, and enabling electrocatalytic decomposition of ammonia to provide green hydrogen. Overall, the joint efforts between Germany and France signify a step towards a sustainable and efficient hydrogen economy in Europe.
