Government Initiates Pilot Projects to Integrate Hydrogen in Steel Production
Key Ideas
  • The government has sanctioned three pilot projects for integrating hydrogen in steel production, with financial support of Rs 347 crore available for these initiatives.
  • Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd and Simplex Castings, along with SAIL, have been selected for the pilot projects, each focusing on different capacities and aspects of hydrogen use.
  • The projects aim to demonstrate the feasibility, safety, performance, and economic viability of green hydrogen-based steel-making processes, paving the way for sustainable steel production.
  • The initiatives are part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and align with efforts towards achieving low-carbon iron and steel manufacturing.
The Indian government has taken a significant step towards integrating hydrogen into steel production by sanctioning three pilot projects in collaboration with Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and two consortiums. These projects, supported with Rs 347 crore in financial aid, are slated for completion within the next three years. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has spearheaded this initiative to promote the use of hydrogen in the steel sector, as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The selected consortiums, namely Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd and Simplex Castings, have outlined plans for pilot plants ranging from 40 to 3,200 tonnes-per-day capacity, each focusing on different aspects like DRI production and blast furnace enhancement. The primary objectives of these pilot projects include showcasing the operational feasibility, safety, performance, and economic viability of the green hydrogen-based steel-making processes. By exploring hydrogen injection in steel production, these projects aim to validate the technical aspects and pave the way towards sustainable and low-carbon iron and steel manufacturing.
