Key Ideas
  • The PtX Development Fund has awarded a substantial grant of 30 million euros to a Moroccan project focused on green ammonia production.
  • The project, led by startup INNOVX Hydrojeel for the OCP Group, aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2026 using hydrogen from renewable sources.
  • The initiative plans to boost production to one million tonnes by 2027 and three million tonnes by 2032, contributing to Morocco's reduction of imported gray fertilizers.
  • The PtX Development Fund's support, in collaboration with KGAL Investment Management and KfW, underscores the importance of advancing sustainable energy projects in the Global South.
The PtX Development Fund has selected a groundbreaking project in Morocco focused on green ammonia production to receive a significant grant of 30 million euros. This non-repayable funding, provided by KGAL Investment Management and the German bank KfW, aims to propel the Jorf Hydrogen Platform, spearheaded by startup INNOVX Hydrojeel for the OCP Group, towards sustainable energy development. The project, selected from 98 applications from seven countries, will be implemented at the industrial park of Jorf near El Jadida and aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2026. The production process will rely on hydrogen generated from renewable energy sources, utilizing wind and solar power plants. Initially, the output will be used for green fertilizers for the domestic market. The project has ambitious goals to increase production to one million tonnes by 2027 and three million tonnes by 2032, aligning with Morocco's strategy to reduce reliance on imported gray fertilizers. Thomas Engelmann, director of the PtX Development Fund, highlighted the minimized risks associated with the project's development and market reception. The support from the PtX Development Fund and Germany's BMZ showcases a commitment to advancing sustainable energy projects in the Global South.
