The H2Med project, a significant transnational initiative, has garnered positive outcomes following a Call for Interest to identify regional needs along the hydrogen corridor. Five transmission system operators (TSOs) from various European countries initiated the call to assess future infrastructure requirements across the hydrogen value chain. The results, unveiled in January 2025, revealed strong interest from 170+ companies with 500 projects, showcasing the project's critical role in achieving decarbonization and industrial objectives. The project focuses on connecting hydrogen networks from Portugal and Spain to France and Germany, with specific components like the CelZa interconnection and the BarMar subsea pipeline. Projections highlight substantial export potential for the Iberian Peninsula and growing demand in countries like France and Germany, with consumption estimates reaching 17 to 21 Mt/year by 2040. To support the project's development, the H2Med Alliance was established to drive commercial and advocacy efforts, ensuring ongoing support through stakeholder collaborations. Addressing challenges related to aligning market regulations and facilitating industrial commitments are key priorities. Additionally, a match-making platform will be implemented to foster new projects, market advancements, and strengthen commercial relationships for future collaborations. The success of the H2Med project underscores its vital role in shaping the European hydrogen corridor and advancing sustainable energy initiatives.
