Hydrogen-Powered Forklifts Launched at Port of Nagoya
Key Ideas
  • Nagoya Port Authority deploys hydrogen fuel-cell forklifts for various businesses at the port, enhancing operations and promoting green energy.
  • Suzuki Shokan leads the project overseeing the deployment of fuel cell forklifts to terminal operators and logistics companies at the Port of Nagoya.
  • Hydrogen refuelling methods and logistics are optimized through practical delivery methods in the port and harbour sectors, showcasing commitment to sustainability.
  • The successful implementation of hydrogen distribution in parking lots signifies the need for strategic planning to identify ideal refuelling locations for future endeavors.
The Nagoya Port Authority has introduced hydrogen fuel-cell forklifts at the Port of Nagoya, partnering with terminal operators and logistics companies to enhance operations and drive towards greener energy solutions. The project, facilitated by Suzuki Shokan, a Tokyo-based gas firm, saw the deployment of fuel cell forklifts to several businesses including Tobishima Container Berth, Asahi Unyu Kaisha, Shinko Kaiun, Kamigumi, and Toyo Butsuryu. These forklifts were refuelled with hydrogen during a five-day operation in August, showcasing the feasibility of hydrogen usage in daily operations. The Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA) highlighted the importance of strategic hydrogen delivery due to the time required for recharging accumulators. By distributing hydrogen in unoccupied areas and parking lots, the initiative aimed to streamline refuelling processes and suggested the need for pre-planned discussions to identify appropriate locations. This initiative aligns with the global shift towards sustainable practices in the maritime industry. Additionally, the arrival of the LNG-fuelled Freesia Leader at the Port of Nagoya further underlines the port's commitment to environmental conservation and innovation.
