India's Green Hydrogen Infrastructure Development in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu
Key Ideas
  • Three ISTS schemes in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are being developed to feed green hydrogen/ammonia units, with an aggregate outlay of around Rs.8,200 crore.
  • Manufacturing potential identified in Kandla, Mundra, and Tuticorin with estimated demands of hundreds of MW from green hydrogen/ammonia units by 2028.
  • The schemes involve new substations, transmission lines, and augmentation of existing infrastructure to support the growing demand for green hydrogen and ammonia.
  • The bidding process led by Bid Process Coordinators PFC Consulting Ltd and REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd is set to open technical bids by December 2024.
India is pushing forward with the development of green hydrogen infrastructure in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu through three Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) schemes. These schemes, with an estimated outlay of Rs.8,200 crore, aim to support upcoming green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing units in the regions. In Gujarat, the Kandla scheme is designed to cater to a 1,690 MW additional electricity demand by FY28, while the Mundra scheme will transfer 3 GW to Mundra from the Navinal substation. In Tamil Nadu, the Tuticorin scheme with a transmission capacity of 4.5 GW will meet the requirements of green hydrogen/ammonia units. The projects involve the establishment of new substations, transmission lines, and augmentation of existing infrastructure to meet the growing demand for green energy. The bidding process, overseen by Bid Process Coordinators PFC Consulting Ltd and REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd, is underway with technical bids expected to be opened by December 2024. This development signifies a positive step towards energy transition and the adoption of green hydrogen technology in India.
