India's Green Hydrogen Transition: Tranche-II Capacity and National Mission Update
Key Ideas
  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India announces 450,000 TPA capacity for Green Hydrogen under Tranche-II of SIGHT Programme, with emphasis on biomass-based pathways.
  • Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to implement the tranche with a focus on least average incentive quoted by bidders in two capacity buckets.
  • National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy, reduce fossil fuel imports, and establish technology and market leadership in Green Hydrogen.
  • Mission's launch in 2023 with Rs 19,744 crores investment until FY 2029-30 aims to inspire global clean energy transition and significant decarbonisation of the economy.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has unveiled the capacity details for Tranche-II of the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme. This tranche will have a capacity of 450,000 TPA of Green Hydrogen, with a specific allocation of 40,000 TPA for biomass-based pathways in bucket-II and the rest for technology-agnostic pathways in bucket-I. Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will be overseeing the implementation of this tranche, with the bidding process focusing on the least average incentive quoted by bidders. Bidders can participate in either or both buckets, with capacity ranging from 500 TPA to 90,000 TPA in bucket-II and 10,000 TPA to 90,000 TPA in bucket-I. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, initiated on January 4, 2023, with a budget of Rs 19,744 crores until FY 2029-30, aims to drive India towards self-reliance through clean energy. This mission not only targets decarbonisation of the economy but also aims to decrease reliance on fossil fuel imports while positioning India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology and market. The ultimate goal is to inspire global clean energy transitions and foster sustainability.
