The Indian Government has initiated the 'Green Steel Mission' to enhance the environmental sustainability of the steel sector with an estimated investment of Rs 15,000 crore. This mission aims to reduce carbon emissions and help achieve Net Zero targets in the industry. Key components of this mission include the introduction of a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, incentives for renewable energy use, and mandates for government purchases of Green Steel to stimulate demand for low-emission products. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is leading the National Green Hydrogen Mission, integrating green hydrogen into steel production to decarbonize the sector and contribute to India's environmental objectives. A recent report titled 'Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan' outlines strategies for decarbonising the industry. Additionally, the release of a Taxonomy for Green Steel sets standards to identify and categorize low-emission steel, supporting the industry's green transition. The Government has also introduced policies like the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy to enhance resource efficiency. Pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, such as hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron and hydrogen in blast furnaces, demonstrate efforts towards sustainable practices. Future prospects include exploring projects to inject green hydrogen into DRI units to replace natural gas. Overall, these initiatives reflect a strong commitment to transforming India's steel industry into a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly sector through green technologies and decarbonisation efforts.
