India's National Green Hydrogen Mission: Accelerating Adoption in Transport Sector
Key Ideas
  • The Indian government has initiated five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission for using hydrogen in buses and trucks.
  • Major companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and Ashok Leyland are involved in the deployment of 37 hydrogen vehicles on 10 different routes across the country.
  • A total financial support of approximately Rs 208 crore has been allocated by the government to kickstart these pilot projects, with a timeline of 18-24 months for commissioning.
  • The Mission aims to develop commercially viable technologies for utilizing hydrogen as fuel in the transport sector and supporting infrastructure like hydrogen refuelling stations to promote green hydrogen adoption.
India has taken a significant step towards promoting green hydrogen adoption in the transport sector by launching five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has sanctioned these projects, which include deploying 37 vehicles (buses and trucks) on 10 different routes across the country. These vehicles, a mix of hydrogen fuel cell-based and internal combustion engine-based, will be provided by major companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and Ashok Leyland. In addition, nine hydrogen refuelling stations will be set up to support this initiative. The government has allocated around Rs 208 crore to facilitate the implementation of these projects, with a target timeline of 18-24 months for their commissioning. The overarching goal of the Mission is to advance the development of commercially viable hydrogen technologies in the transport sector and establish the necessary infrastructure for green hydrogen utilization. With an ambitious outlay of Rs 19,744 crore until FY 2029-30, the National Green Hydrogen Mission in India aims to drive environmental sustainability and technological innovation in the field of hydrogen-based transportation.
