The Government of India has initiated significant steps towards the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source through the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Five pilot projects have been launched to introduce hydrogen-fueled buses and trucks, marking a crucial milestone in India's efforts towards sustainable transportation. These projects, sanctioned by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, involve 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles and nine refueling stations across ten strategic routes. The projects aim to validate the technical feasibility, operational performance, and economic viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles while establishing essential refueling infrastructure. The selected vehicles, including fuel cell-based and internal combustion engine-based models, are set to be deployed in various regions to assess the potential for hydrogen adoption in commercial transport. Companies like Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC are among the entities awarded these projects, highlighting a collaborative effort towards green technology adoption. With an allocated budget of ₹2.08 billion, the projects are expected to be commissioned within the next 18 to 24 months, contributing to the development of a sustainable hydrogen fuel ecosystem in India. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, a key component of India's strategy to reduce fossil fuel imports and promote decarbonization, is set to receive substantial funding until 2030. Additionally, recent approvals for using hydrogen in steel production further demonstrate India's commitment to green hydrogen technology. The government's financial support for these initiatives underscores a positive outlook towards advancing clean energy solutions in the country, positioning India as a frontrunner in the global shift towards sustainable and innovative technologies.
